Top 10 Best Video Games Of 2012

In years to come you might be sat in an armchair, puffing leisurely at your pipe while the grandsons gather excitedly at you ankles. ‘Tell us of your younger, days, grandpa..

Your eyes will haze over in remembered joy: 2012, what a year to have been a gamer….

Did you play all of 2012’s finest? Not to worry, we did, and here’s the best!

10. CALL OF DUTY: BLACK OPS 2

XBOX 360, PS3, PC

Tripple A games certainly aren’t getting any cheaper – to make or to buy – but in the case of Black Ops 2 you get a whole lot of bang for your buck. The Zombies mode alone warrants its own standalone game, while the single-player campaign is packed with more stunning set-pieces than our frontal lobes could handle. Delve into MP and you might as well quit your job, divorce the missus or leave your educational establishment, because you ain’t getting ’owt else done for a long while, soldier.

9. XCOM: ENEMY UNKNOWN

XBOX 360, PS3, PC

There’s nothing like a good old fashioned war story and Firaxis‘ return to the seminal alien invasion strategy world of XCOM provided ample opportunity for us to wax lyrical. Arguably it’s most prominent feature is the inclusion of permadeath. Once a squad member kicks It they’re gone forever. Especially tear jerking if they were particularly well trained or if you had named them after the family pet.

8. MASS EFFECT 3

XBOX 360, PS3, PC

Ok, so we’re going to assume that everyone has reached the end of Mass Effect 3. No, well then crack to it! It’s only the most talked about ending in video game history! So controversial was the final choice that entire communities of people made up their own ending, which oddly felt more legitimate than what we actually got. The conclusion of Commander Shepard’s story is still epic, though.

7. FIFA 13

XBOX 360, PS3, PC

FIFA retained its place at the top of the table this year, beating out eternal rival PES with both its established quality and a top drawer-ful of new features. The introduction of a new First Touch system means that even veteran players can become victims of some fudged touches. It also means that our Matt SG has an, admittedly slim, chance of winning a game through bundle-ability alone. Well, that’s what he keeps telling himself…

6. JOURNEY

PS3

Seeing or hearing some of the vindictive tripe that’s flung about online it’s scarlly easy to come to the conclusion that gamers are a bunch of spoiled, selfobsessed arseholes. Any time spent in thagamecompany’s stunning PS3 exclusive should educate you, rightly, that actually we’re all, deep down, loving people that need one another. No spoilers, you have to experience the ending for yourself.

5. GUILD WARS 2

PC

There’s simply too much game on offer in ArenaNet’s ground breaking MMORPG. The land of Tyrla is bursting with secret locations to discover, Dynamic Events to take part in, Dungeons to explore and a Personal Story to experience. Not only that but since launch it’s been supported on a monthly basis with timed events kicking off whole new acts of crowd-pleasing stuff to do.

4. FAR CRY 3

XBOX 360, PS3, PC

Packed a Hawaiian shirt and your flip-flops? Because once you get your hands on a copy of Far Cry 3 you’ll be whisked off to a tropical island paradise that’ll take you forever to fully explore. Jason Brody’s death-draped jaunt through pirate infested, drug-infused madness is set on one of the biggest, most open-ended game worlds we’re ever had the pleasure of uncovering.

3. HITMAN: ABSOLUTION

XBOX 360, PS3, PC

The most accomplished Hitman game to date, Absolution is wickedly funny, technically brilliant and delectably vast. Contracts mode elongates the whole experience considerably, letting you show off your silent assassin skills before laying your silver bailers at the feet of your friends to see if they can match you. The possibilities are there for this game to keep killers killing for donkeys.

2. THE WALKING DEAD

XBOX 360, PS3, PC, Mobile

Robert Kirkman’s incredibly well written human-drama-with-zombies comic book series seemed like a tough property to bring to a trigger happy generation of gamers. Telltale Games managed it wondrously though, in this heart-churning episodic point and click series. At time of writing the final episode is yet to be released, so we’ve not experienced the end. But if the harrowing succession of difficult choices, shocking emotional turns and its (so far) incredibly well implemented script is anything to go by, it’ll be a doozy.

1. DISHONORED

XBOX 360, PS3, PC

Like central character Corvo Attano, Dishonored seems to have come from out of nowhere. One minute we’re happily looking forward to Bioshock Infinite, brooding over the absence of Half Life: Episode 3, when suddenly Arkane Studios plants a smacker in our mitts.

Technically you can rocket through the game in quick smart time, stabbing everything with a pulse, but the real pleasure comes when you start experimenting with your masked assassin’s powers to get through levels with as few kills and as low a chaos rating as possible. We’ll also point out that the city of Dunwall’s an intensely storied place that we can’t wait to return to.
